As Jack Morgan tells it, “We three were quaffing a slug, nibbling an hors d’oeuvre and shoving toward inventive genius.” Martin and Kunett had their minds on their vodka and wondered what would happen if a two-ounce shot joined with Morgan’s ginger beer and the squeeze of a lemon.
Ice was ordered, lemons procured, mugs ushered in and the concoction put together. Cups were raised, the men counted to five and down went the first taste. It was good. It lifted the spirit to adventure. Four or five later the mixture was christened the Moscow Mule…
In relation to the copper mug, Jack Morgan apparently had a girlfriend that owned a business that manufactured copper products. Essentially, there was a vodka distributor, a bar owner with an overstock of ginger beer, and a copper manufacturer that were all having problems selling their product individually. When they combined all of them together, you get the incredibly popular and very delicious Moscow Mule!
Later, it was discovered that the chemical reaction of the citric acid from the lime/lemon reacted to the copper in such a way that gave the drink a unique taste vice a normal glass.
Original Moscow Mule Recipe:-
1 lime wedge (or lemon to be authentic)
2 oz Vodka (Smirnoff to be authentic)
4-6 oz Ginger Beer (Cock‘n’Bull to be authentic)
1 Solid Copper Mug w/ Ice
Instructions – Squeeze lime/lemon into Solid Copper Mule Mug, drop spent lime/lemon wedge into mug, fill mug with ice, pour 2 oz vodka over ice, pour 4-6 oz ginger beer over ice. Stir and Enjoy! You can also garnish with a mint sprig and add more lime juice to suit taste.
